Remarks on September 28, 2020
MISSISSAUGA – Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga-Lakeshore, joined Premier Doug Ford to congratulate and thank Max Cucchiella and his wife, Sarah Veinot, of the Como Foundation, for an historic $5 million donation to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation:
Thank you Premier, I’m proud you’re here with us today, to help us mark this very special occasion.
Hearing loss is the fastest growing chronic condition today, with over a million Canadians affected.
Last week, the International Week of the Deaf – we had a chance to raise awareness of the challenges facing Canadians who are hard of hearing. And unfortunately, COVID-19 has created many new ones.
But this adversity has also revealed extraordinary resilience, ingenuity, and generosity –and the Como Foundation is a perfect example of all three qualities.
When I first met Max and Sarah, back in May, they had closed down their construction company, and retooled to produce accessible masks, with clear windows, to help make life easier for people who rely on lipreading.
Their entire family, from their elderly parents, to their young children, worked 10 hours a day, making this very special PPE, to donate to some of our most vulnerable, right across Ontario.
It's been my honour to help with a few of their deliveries, including: Services and Housing in the Province, in Mississauga; the Learning Disabilities Association of Peel Region; the New Haven Learning Centre, in Etobicoke; Silent Voice Canada, in Toronto, and the Abilities Centre, in Whitby.
Max and Sarah have donated their Access Masks across Canada, and around the world, including the US, and UK. Not only are they making life easier for Ontarians who are hard of hearing, and for their loved ones, but their historic pledge today – $5 million – will help get us a meaningful step closer to a new, modern hospital for Mississauga.
This compassion and generosity reflects the true character and spirit of Ontario.
It makes me proud to be their MPP; it makes me proud to be Canadian; and I hope it will inspire us, as we confront the second wave of COVID-19 this fall.
Because it's only through the creativity and generosity of ordinary Ontarians like Max and Sarah that we will win this battle against the most serious health and economic crisis of our lifetimes, and ensure Ontario comes back stronger, more prosperous, and more united, than ever.
Premier Doug Ford thanks Max and Sarah of the Como Foundation for their historic donation to the Trillium Health Partners Foundation
