Government of Ontario Cuts Red Tape to Build More Housing

MISSISSAUGA — Our government is committed to helping people struggling to find affordable housing that fits their family budget. We have put forwards a plan that will bring real relief and real choice to people in Mississauga-Lakeshore.

More Homes, More Choice: Ontario’s Housing Supply Action Plan will tackle Ontario’s housing crisis. With this plan, our government is encouraging our housing and building partners to do their part to build more housing that meets the needs of people here in Mississauga, and across the province. We will encourage industry to address challenges like affordability, size of rental units, and housing type.

The previous government created a complex housing development system that is impossible to navigate. Red tape and government fees can add years of paperwork and thousands of dollars to the cost of an average home, which drives prices up for renters and buyers alike.

"After many years of mismanagement, Mississauga has one of the least affordable housing markets in North America," said Rudy Cuzzetto, MPP for Mississauga-Lakeshore. "Cutting red tape will make it easier to build new housing supply, and provide more choice and affordability for the people who need it most."

The new measures proposed in More Homes, More Choice would streamline the overly complicated approvals process to remove unnecessary duplication and red tape, while protecting health and safety, a vibrant agricultural sector and the environment – including the Greenbelt.

“We will fix the housing crisis without touching the Greenbelt. It will be preserved in all its beauty,” said Cuzzetto.

Encouraging builders to build a mix of different types of housing – from family-sized condos, starter townhouses, to mid-rise rentals and more will help people get into homes. Our government also wants to convert old, vacant buildings into new modern homes and expand existing neighbourhoods, while protecting their character.

People are spending too much time in traffic on their way back and forth to work. That’s time away from their families, friends and things that matter most. Our plan would make it easier to build more housing near transit and amenities, and help create vibrant neighbourhoods.

“Our action plan puts people first,” said Cuzzetto. “Whether you are buying your first condo, a growing family looking for a larger place to rent, or an empty-nester downsizing into a smaller and more accessible home.”

Building more housing will also make Mississauga-Lakeshore more attractive to businesses and investors, showing that Ontario is once again open for business, and open for jobs.
